This study provides information for Virginia policymakers and stakeholders on the performance of the state’s workers’ compensation system by examining income benefit payments, medical payments, duration of disability, benefit delivery expenses, litigiousness, timeliness of payments, and other metrics. This report compares these metrics in Virginia with similar measures from 17 other states and examines drivers of changes in these metrics primarily from 2011 to 2016 (evaluated in 2017). Effective January 1, 2018, Virginia implemented medical fee schedules for workers’ compensation services. The analysis in this study reflects data prior to implementation of the medical fee schedule.
